Hair Loss In Children -
Just when parents are expecting their children to grow, some children’s hair just doesn’t want to cooperate and turns the other way around. It falls out. It is very frustrating and scary for children to see lumps of hair on the bathroom floor or on the brush. It may be alarming but children and parents shouldn’t because it is just temporary.
It is possible for children to lose hair especially if the child is undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Cancer patients only lose hair when they go through treatment and cancer doesn’t cause hair fall. So parents can stop worrying about it.
Some real causes of hair loss among children and teens are:
1. Telogen Effluvium
Children with this condition are the ones who recently got sick or underwent surgery. Those who had fever, weight loss or emotional stress are also included. This causes the child to lose hair for 6 weeks to three months.
Studies show that this happens because the child’s body turns into a resting phase so instead of growing hair, the hair falls out. But when the body has recovered, it goes back again to the normal growth phase so new hair grows.
2. Ringworm Of The Scalp
This condition is caused by ringworm, a skin disease that also affects the scalp. This can be spotted because of the red lesions that are circular in shape which can be found in the scalp. This is commonly itchy and scaly. In some cases, hair doesn’t fall out. The hair strand breaks instead.
3. Bacterial Infection
This condition is similar to ringworm. The symptoms are almost similar but this infection is caused by staph aureaus bacteria instead of ringworm.
4. Traction Alopecia
This is usually seen in individuals who wear tight ponytails or braids. Some babies who constantly rub the back of their head against the crib or other material may have it too.
5. Alopecia Areata
This condition is an autoimmune disorder or a case where the immune system attacks the body specifically, hair follicles. It causes round or oval shaped patches of hair loss in the scalp or other body parts. This spot is smooth and soft to the touch. This can be easily treated by injection or topical ointments. Hair grows back on its own too.
6. Hair Pulling
It is a habit among infants that they should overcome as they grow. But in some instances, children continue to do it even if they are growing old. Sometimes it causes hair loss and you can help stop it by cutting the child’s hair short.
7. Trichotillomania
It is similar to hair pulling but it is definitely more serious than that. In this case, a child pulls his or her hair out compulsively when the child feels tension. There are cases when the child does it for pleasure, gratification or relief. Children who have this condition have noticeable hair loss and should be evaluated by a psychologist.
In addition to the causes already mentioned, there some cases of hair fall among children that can be caused by :
• Malnutrition
• Thyroid disorders
• Illnesses (like lupus, diabetes mellitus or iron-
• Vitamin A toxicity
• Abnormalities of the hair shaft
