Laser Treatment For Hair Loss

 

Apart from pharmacological remedies to hair loss, there exists another procedure that is directly aimed at the areas of the scalp that are already balding. This procedure is called low-level laser therapy.

Introducing: The Laser

Laser is actually an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. LASER or laser has been in use since the early 60s as treatment for various ailments. Apart from hair removal and a myriad of other medical and aesthetic uses, low-level laser therapy is also being used by doctors to stimulate the growth of hair in previously bald individuals.

 

The specific region in the skin that is the focus of low-level laser therapy are the chromophores. Concisely, chromophores are atoms in the skin that produce color. These atoms in the skin molecules produce specific colors through the selective absorption of emitted light. Here’s the big difference between high-powered lasers and low-level lasers.

 

High-powered lasers can actually cut through organic tissues and blood vessels; they’re used in cosmetic procedures to remove unwanted lines and tissues. However, low-level lasers are the direct inverse of high-powered lasers. They do not create heat and they are used to heal the skin and tissues rather than cut through them.

The Theories Behind The Science Of LLT

Hungary’s own Endre Mester is recognized as the first person to use lasers as a therapeutic device. However, his first use of low-level lasers was not with hair loss but with wounds. Nevertheless, the LLT was able to promote better wound healing. This opened up a vista of possibilities for further uses of LLT for other conditions.

 

There are two theories that support the use of LLT or low-level laser therapy for balding spots.

 

The first theory is that the chromophores themselves absorb the single wavelength of light emitted by the LLT, resulting in increased blood flow and oxygen flow in the scalp.

 

The result is that the increased blood flow and oxygen stimulates the reproduction of healthy hair follicles. That sounds quite bright, but there’s another theory behind the use of LLT.

 

The second theory revolves around the interaction not between the LLT and chromophores but between the LLT and hair follicles. You see, it’s very possible for photochemical reactions to take place. As the name implies, photochemical reactions are specific effects of light on chemical compounds or other biological structures.

 

What happens according to the second theory of LLT is that the structure of the cell’s chemical processors is changed. So instead of continuing into the death phase, the hair follicles are signaled to begin a renewed reproductive phase.

Important Insight With The Use Of LLT

Who would benefit the most from the use of low-level laser therapy on the scalp? Take note: clinicians often recommend that people with androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness are the best candidates for such a hair loss treatment.

 

It has even been suggested that LLT would work better if topical hair loss compounds such as minoxidil were used alongside the laser treatment. If you don’t like smearing something on your bald spots, you might want to get a prescription for an alternative drug called finasteride.
