Nettle Root Extracts For Hair Loss

Going natural on treating hair loss has become popular nowadays. There are a number of herbal remedies that have been widely used in treating hair loss and preventing baldness. Among them is the nettle root. This is even perhaps the most popular commercially available natural remedy for hair loss.

What Is Nettle Root?

Nettle root consists of the dried or fresh roots of the Nettle plant (Urtica dioica or Urtica urens). Nettle grows abundantly as a weed in many parts of North America and Europe. It is also called the stinging nettle as its leaves and stems are covered with hair that stings when it comes into contact with the human skin.

The root of the plant is commonly sought after as they are believed to be therapeutically valuable. It is a common folk medicine and is used as an astringent, a tonic herb or a diuretic.

For centuries, various cultures used nettle root for a plethora of illnesses including:

Aching joints

Rheumatic pain

Several bladder

Urinary disorders

Benefits Of Nettle Root to Hair Loss Treatment

In the last 20 years, and mainly in Europe, nettle root extracts has been used to treat symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a condition that arises due to the presence of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is produced when the male hormone, testosterone, comes into contact with an enzyme triggering a conversion to DHT. Nettle root extract is believed to limit the amount of testosterone circulating in the blood. This then leads to lesser possibilities of DHT production.

Similarly, hair loss and baldness is triggered by the presence of DHT in hair follicles. This leads the follicles to thin considerably and prevent regrowth. Thus, it is believed that a cure for BPH also benefits hair loss problems in patients.

How To Use Nettle Root For Hair Loss Treatment?

There are already a number of commercial preparations for hair loss with nettle root as an active ingredient, or in conjunction with other natural remedies such as saw palmetto and dong quai. It is said that the combination of these three herbs makes for a potent remedy against hair loss and eventual baldness.

There are also claims that freeze-dried extracts are better than those that are dried regularly. So when buying nettle root supplements, it is best to check the label if freeze-drying is employed in processing the extracts. Topical application is also possible and several products are readily available.

Although Nettle Root is already a popular herbal remedy, there had been no conclusive studies to back the claims of efficacy in treating hair loss. It also has its share of side effects as told from experience of people who tried. Thus, it is important to consult a health professional, especially if you using another drug as a medication for other ailments, or is pregnant or nursing a child.
