Psychological Effects Of Hair Loss In Men

Physical looks can be a lot when you’re still young. You need it when courting or taking on a job interview. More often than not, having the right looks can bolster your self-confidence and esteem which in turn gets projected by the way you talk and your comportment.

In a world that values looks above many things, the last thing you want is to lose your precious hair. Your hair pretty much defines your overall look and appeal. Take it out and you lose 50% of your youthful beauty.

Losing More Than Just Your Hair

Men experiencing early sign of baldness or hair loss have been known to suffer from :

Psychological depression

Anxiety

Self doubts

Societal withdrawal

that can take time to overcome or deal with.

These psychological problems often arise and are typically severe at the very onset of thinning hair.

It isn’t as bad when you are already reaching middle age, when you already enjoy some financial security and a brooding family. But for many experiencing thinning hair during their teens or early 20s, the psychological distress at a time when youthful looks matter a lot can be overwhelming.

Early hair loss caused by medication or work stress can be regained by taking out the stress or the medication. Alopecia caused by chemotherapy can also be treated once the cancer is in remission, so you regain back your full set of hair. But for many whose hair loss is caused by genes, you could lose a lot more than your hair.

Self-Esteem

Hair loss adversely taxes men’s ego more than anything else. Your body self-image and self-concept undergo a most unwanted changeover that can be difficult to accept or cope with.   The biblical Samson may have his supernatural strength proportional to his hair strands, but these days, society often equates a luscious hair with youthful vigor and conformity with the standards of handsomeness and male attractiveness.

A thinning hairline way advance in its time can diminish not only one’s youthful and handsome looks, but it also creates mental and psychic assault on self esteem and self worth, especially at a time when looks can be decisive in getting your partner or a job.

Social Perception and Acceptability

Perception is said to be everything.  And first impressions on how you look do more than just last longer. Given a choice, society seems to have a preference to males with a full set of hair than one without.

Unless you are a celebrity like Bruce Willis, Patrick Steward or Vin Diesel, or can show overwhelming air of confidence despite it, your social acceptability can diminish somewhat with a thinning hair or bald head.

You know that given a choice, women prefer men with a pretty good set of hair than men without.  It’s so easy to equate men with thinning hair or bald spots on the head with advancing age. And men generally do not like being seen as older than they really are.

Coping With Hair Loss

The key is to remain liking yourself despite losing your hair. It is not the end of the world if you do, even at an early age. The hair on your head is just a small part of the body and the human species is known to compensate for what it loses or lacks, either instinctively or consciously.

You can build–up your body muscles or show what you are inside which is more important than mere superficial beauty. Moreover, being bald is very well accepted these days. There are well-known celebrities who are bald. You know them. And you see a lot of teens these days sporting a shaved head. There are benefits to it. Like freedom from the daily routines of priming your hair or having to spend on your grooming kits and salons. Think about it!
